Representative Gabe Vasquez (NM-2) votes to support bill defining anti-Zionism and some criticisms of Israel as antisemitism, after ‘present’ vote on earlier resolution
Melanie Stansbury (NM-1) and Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-3) voted against it. Fernández described similar bills as “sticky traps” for Democrats.
The House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday designed to crack down on antisemitism on college campuses.
The bill sailed through by a 320-91 bipartisan vote, with 70 House Democrats and 21 House Republicans voting against it.
Lawmakers who voted against the bill aren't necessarily supportive of antisemitism, or opposed to efforts to curb it. Rather, they had issues with the definition of antisemitism that the bill would mandate.
The Antisemitism Awareness Act, led by Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York and cosponsored by 61 other lawmakers across both parties, would require the Department of Education to use definitions of antisemitism proposed by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) when enforcing anti-discrimination laws.
That IHRA definition of antisemitism — alongside obvious instances of antisemitism — encompasses some criticisms commonly made against the State of Israel, including:
Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.
Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.
That's led to concerns on the part of more progressive lawmakers that free speech norms could be violated, and that anti-Zionism or opposition to Israel could be conflated with antisemitism.
On Wednesday, Rep. Jerry Nadler — the longest-serving Jewish House Democrat — spoke out against the bill on the House floor, arguing that the IHRA's definitions of antisemitism "may include protected speech in some contexts, particularly with respect to criticism of the State of Israel."
"Speech that is critical of Israel alone does not constitute unlawful discrimination," said Nadler, arguing that the Department of Education already has the ability to investigate discrimination under current law.
…
In December, Nadler also led 92 House Democrats (including Gabe Vasquez) in voting "present" on a GOP-sponsored resolution that equated anti-Zionism with antisemitism. 13 House Democrats voted against the resolution outright.
Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-51):
"As a Jewish woman, I've experienced antisemitism all my life. I've been called a kike while I was waiting for a drink at a bar when I was at college. I've heard too many 'jokes' to count about my frizzy hair and my big nose. I remember my classmates who thought it was funny to say people were 'being Jewed' when someone was being frugal. I know the hatred and ignorance that lie behind all these comments, and how they can quickly escalate into violence - and I'm deeply concerned about the rise of antisemitism in San Diego and across the country.
"But I do not believe that anti-Zionism is inherently antisemitism. I support Israel's right to exist, but I also know many people who question whether Israel should exist as a Jewish state who are deeply connected to their Judaism.
"Today, I voted against H.R. 6090, because it fails to effectively address the very real rise of antisemitism, all while defunding colleges and universities across the country and punishing many, if not all, of the nonviolent protestors speaking out against the Israeli military's conduct. Conflating free speech and hate crimes will not make Jewish students any safer. This bill would stifle First Amendment rights to free speech and free assembly. And it would distract from real antisemitism and our efforts to address it."

I submitted my FAFSA to the wrong San Diego University what do I do?
So, I'm an incoming freshman who has applied and got accepted to UCSD and as I was checking the my housing I saw that they hadn't received my processed FAFSA form. Because it hadn't been processed I assumed it was due to all the errors with the online application causing it to be delayed. So anyways, I was checking my housing and decided to check my FAFSA form because I felt like I should've received it by now. I checked and on the added schools where I should've had UCSD on the list I had USD... the deadline for FAFSA submission is by May 2nd. I made the corrections and now am waiting for it to be processed. However, I received a FAFSA submission report that says submission was at May 3rd (even though I live in a PST time zone and submitted at 9:30 pm). What do I do? Am I screwed? I need the aid or else I can't attend the school. I checked if there could be appeal for the FAFSA and there is not. For the other schools I'm waitlisted at should, I have received financial aid from them. Should I just wait to get off the waitlist for UCSB or UCD cuz UCSD is not possible anymore?

Two-for-one Dead Ringer
I got a bilateral orchiectomy post-divorce due to getting involved in a group that fetishizes eunuchs and I deeply regret it. AMA
I (28M) divorced after being married for 3 years. As a way to fill the void I started exploring all kinds of weird fetishes and found my way into a group that encouraged me to become a eunuch. I became obsessed with the look / perceived feel of being a eunuch and the emasculating aspect of it. I went to a doctor in Tijuana (Aguilar) and had the procedure done. They picked me up from my hotel in San Diego, sent me back, and that was that. I became super depressed and full of regret immediately. I've learned to live with my decision and it's now been 2 years since.
My ex wife has kids and a new husband. I have no wife, no kid, and no balls.

Cost to install laminate flooring
I know there may be some variables, but ballpark what it would cost to have laminate installed on approx 1000 sf. I already removed the carpet and tile/thin set where we need it installed. I was planning on doing it myself, but I don’t want to risk messing up the cuts as we have an awkward shaped pantry and two hall closets included. I have the flooring on a pallet in the garage. Thanks! (In the Central Valley of California (not SF or San Diego)).

Why didn’t the US buy the whole of France during the Louisiana purchase? It’s just a bit more land. Were they stupid?

Sun God Reanimated
So. Sun God '24 was cancelled because peaceful protestors standing against genocide were deemed too much of a danger to the public. What a load of horseshit, huh? This is the same university that gave our chancellor a $500,000 raise in 2023 and yet is completely unable to scrape up funds for extra security? Not that we'd need it anyway, since the protestors who have been staying in the on-campus encampments have been completely peaceful and respectful as of now.
This is a complete slap in the face of every tuition-paying student and every person looking forward to this festival. This is the one festival we have to look forward to at the end of the year other than probably Muirstock. We're not SDSU, this is the closest most students will get to seeing a dayger during their entire college career.
And on top of that, UCSD just thinks you're all stupid. They think you'll actually believe it that innocent protestors are the problem, and not the evil empire billion dollar business that is actively investing in state-sponsored terrorism. Hell, they're probably hoping that this cancellation will cause more division amongst us, and that the protestors pushing for the freedom of Palestine will get even more hate and resentment for this. They want this protest to fail, and they think you'll let them get away with it. They take comfort in our laziness and ignorance.
I've given it some good brainstorming for what to do about Sun God. We could throw a bonfire at Black's Beach. We could have a kickback in RIMAC field until UCSD inevitably kicks us out. We could go to a bar. We could throw a party at someone's house. All these ideas are not realistically feasible for recreating a festival of such size and are bordering on lame. The only way to bring back Sun God this year is to make it anew.
At 12pm on Saturday, gather to Library Walk. Bring tents, chairs, tables, water bottles, balloons, musical instruments, art kits, blankets, speakers, inflatable movie screens, homemade goods, grills, slip n slides, water guns, personal merch from that one side hustle you have, you name it. Whatever you want to bring, we will have. We'll be there to show our love and support to those already in the Library Walk encampments, putting in the work and giving it their all to push for justice for Palestine. We're going full grassroots style festival and protest. This year's Sun God will be about love, justice, and perseverance. Let's make it happen.
For some semblance of organization, if you are planning on doing a performance or display of some kind, please comment below if you are affiliated with any kind of band or group, what equipment you may need, and other details. As stated above, this will be a group effort. If someone needs something, feel free to offer something. It is only through the power of community we're able to do anything at all. The students united will never be defeated
Also as a side note, since this is a half-festival half-protest kind of deal, it may be in your best interest to bring masks and follow safety protocol for peaceful protesting.

Spectrum area post work runs
Anyone near promenade/olivos interested in going on post work(~5pm) runs. For context I’m 25m, working in engineering, generally I’m open minded like trying new things. Nothing too serious concerning workouts, I typically do 3 runs a week or so, 4-5 miles on the weekdays at relaxed paces (10mins mile) on the San Diego creek trail.
