Is it creepy?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 09:23

I'm creeped out by a martial arts instructor in their mid 30s sleeping with a student who is in their early 20s. Is it just me?

Shows like Avatar the last airbender recommendation

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 09:16

Huge Avatar last airbender fan here. Looking for something similar in any kind of cartoon format. Can be shows from any country if it is good. Political, funny, fantasy something in a countryside\fantasy land setting, something to do with natural elements like avatar\Martial Arts (do not like city based\ sci-fi shows\gun related fights). Have seen Korra, dragon prince, FMA brotherhood, Dragon ball, Naruto, Vinland, One punch man, The legend of Vox Machina etc. Really appreciate your suggestions!

Even when i try to make friends i grt isolated...

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 08:59

Hi guys, im a 28 year old black male, ive been feeling increadibly lonely for as long as i can live. Im a calisthenics athletrs so most of my training is a bit isolated. For starters im an introvert by nature and Its hard for me to people when theres a big crowd but ive tried this time to nreally talk tk these guys

Ive joined this muay thai group because i developed an interest fornthe martial arts, however the people there definitely do not like me... ive tried to say hello to them, they will respond but i can just tell that they dislike me from the vibe and thr way they give me dirty looks constantly in and even out of the class.

I've noticed I've progressed quite fast and I've gotten use to muay thai fairly quickly, i just require conditioning through sparring. I still have a lot to learn

When i first joined i got invited to watch one of their fights at a venue and i decided to go, the same energy was reciprocated, there was one guy who i made friends with who however came to me and said it was unfair and asked me to sit with them. Some people at the gym are genuinely nice but certain groups which could be classified as a click are quite the opposite...

I don't know what to do, this whole thing makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable... I've also noticed it's mostly the men that treat me this way.

What is the best thing to do? Especially considering i just came from a gym that had the same vibe to join this one...

Something that happened 6 years ago still torments me

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 08:58

6 years ago I was going to a martial arts class of karate Kyokushin. I was going there for some time and i got really used to the place, i liked the people and the training and almost considered them friends.

That is until tension started building up between me and a black belt guy there. I couldn't explain it, it was coming mostly from him since I felt quite friendly towards everyone. With time he started talking less with me and on the sparring sessions went harder and harder on me each time. Of course I fought back and I felt that irritated him more. I didn't know where that tension was coming from and he didn't really talk about it. One thing I can think of is I'm a tall guy and he was relatively shorter than me.

Then on one sparring session I was matched with him again and of course he went harder than usual on me, we exchanged kicks and punches, he came in close quarters to me and I kneed him in the stomach, then I guess he got enraged and started going full out on me, keep in mind i was an orange belt which is one grade after white belt and I was tired still from the training last week. At one point I stopped fighting and I expected him to do the same but he didn't stop. He kept going and I was just backing down until I reached the corner of the dojo. I noticed this was not usual since the whole training class stopped fighting just to stare at us. The other instructors also didn't interfere. I was kind of shook by what happened. After that he got out from the sparring session without saying a word. After the session was over I went to him and asked if I can have a word. I just wanted to know the reason for this. And he just said ''no'' and walked away.

I suddenly felt humiliated and angry by a black belt that trained far longer than me, without proper explanation. Suddenly my mood towards this karate class changed, I no longer felt this friendly and fun environment I was looking forward to go to every day. I was angry too, during my school years I was bullied a lot. And I guess this unlocked some old trauma in me and made me feel helpless , humiliated, weak again. And I wanted revenge. The next sparring day I went again, thinking I should defend my honor but he wasn't there that day.

I went for a week and then I stopped going altogether. I didn't enjoy it anymore. I tried other martial arts but I gave up on those too. I spent a long time after that, healing from this event, mentally I wanted to get back and kick his ass and try to humiliate him like he did with me, in order to feel strong with myself again. Sort of like I needed to prove myself to him that I'm not a pushover. I felt like he was the reason I stopped going to a sport I enjoy. But another part of me was telling me that I should let go, revenge is not worth it and I should just go training somewhere else and making another spectacle there wouldn't make a good impression on others too and I dont know if I would actually feel better afterwards even if I beat him. So after a time I buried this emotion for some years to come. Then recently I decided to give karate another chance. I went to the same class, its almost nothing has changed, the people, the training drills etc. Even this guy was still going. We didn't talk much but he acted as if nothing happened, of course this was 6 years ago so he probably doesn't even remember the case so i decided to bury the hatchet. A bit later I found a different karate dojo that I found more practical and that I enjoyed more and decided to replace it instead of the old Kyokushin. But as I was participating combat sports again, I noticed this old feeling for revenge stirred up again and I was thinking of going to the next sparring session to teach this guy a lesson again. It seems that I have not let this go entirely. Like a sore wound that never really heals. The reasonable part of me again tells me I should let this go and enjoy my life and the new training dojo.

What do you think I should do?

Are saiyans born with ability to use ki? And if so why did it take intense training for goku to learn it?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 08:57

When raditz came to earth he is shown with the ability to use ki blasts despite being overall less trained than goku and piccolo who have dedicated their whole lives into learning ki based attacks and martial arts. We also see in flash backs that great apes are able to expel ki blasts from their mouth, but we never see goku exhibiting this behavior as an oozaru. Why is this? Is this just another example of toriama forgetting his own lore?

Best hobbies to take up for self improvement/meet new people?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 08:30

Mostly explained in the title, I’m thinking to take up some hobbies for both self improvement/distraction purposes since I mostly spend my days inside on discord/playing games and only recently realised it sounds terrible and unproductive.
What are some skilful and preferably “cool” hobbies which can be taken up by complete noobs? I also want to try meet new people since the majority of my relationships are online so nothing boring like cooking, gardening, etc. I was thinking something like electric guitar or some kind of martial arts…Any suggestions are appreciated ^_^

Is there anyone I can see people performing martial arts in public spaces?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 08:18

I've seen it on a couple of YouTube videos, but unsure if they are preplanned performances or just daily things people do like the group dances. Thank you

How Should I [20F] Approach My Feelings for a Significantly Older Man [36M]?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 08:14

I really like this guy, however right now there are no progress because of the age gap, and this has been going on for the 5th year now. I have been watching his performances since hes in martial arts, basically always watching from afar.

We don't really know each other, basically close to being strangers.

I thought it may be an infatuation but this feeling lasted for so long I don't think I'm being delusional? For the past few years it was like a cycle of me watching his performances and getting excited over it.

Is it time to move on? Because I do not see a possibility in the near future either. As much as I would like to wait till we are older...

Getting started in basketball

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 00:25

I just started playing basketball about a month ago with an intro to basketball intramural course that was offered at my uni gym. A little before then I played a pickup game with some friends and realized I want to play as much as possible and get better at it too. I've gotten really into it and been watching the playoff games with my team in it (76ers). I honestly want to get good enough to the point where I can compete at some professional level but I started so late (currently 20yo freshman in uni) and didn't do many sports in high school aside from martial arts. I'm also 5' 9" on a good day which is sort of a disadvantage. I'm confused on where to start and how to get better by myself at the gym. What I want to know is, how do I train myself to be a good player and what are the prospects of competing having started so late?

The whole setup with Amon’s mask was a colossal waste of interesting premise.

Martial Arts Reddit - Sun, 04/28/2024 - 00:24

When it was first teased I was so hyped for more Face Stealer shenanigans. Like it followed pretty obviously from the whole mask thing. Exchanging his face for energy bending ability would work infinitely better than just another evil bloodbender. Tbh it could bring more variety to the power system of the setting, extending it beyond elemental bending and martial arts. Deals with spirits would be more interesting than doomsday cannons and megazord mecha.

Super Reflexes Tanker: what secondary?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sat, 04/27/2024 - 23:48

I’ve been looking at SR on a Tanker, and it seems really good. I was wondering what secondaries people feel pair well with it?

I’ve recently done Dark Melee and Fiery Melee, so I’d like to count those ones out.

Some I was knocking around were Stone Melee, Katana, Psi Melee, Martial Arts, Savage Melee and Energy Melee. I’m open to suggestions though!

Are female martial arts masters also called "Shifu", which is "teacher-father"?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sat, 04/27/2024 - 23:35

I'm not sure if this is the correct sub to ask this question, but it's related to novel translations, so... shrug. I know that the all words that are used to refer to one's masters and fellow apprentices are compounds where the first word is "master". Like, 師父 (shīfu) is "teacher-father"; 師兄 (shīxiōng), meaning "Senior Brother" is "teacher-elder brother"; 師妹 (shīmèi), which means "Junior Sister" is "teacher-little sister". What are female masters called, if the word for "master" itself means "teacher-father"? Whenever disciples talk about their male masters' wives, the English translation has stuff like "master's wife", and I think the Chinese word for that would be "master-mother". But what if the master herself is a woman? Is the female master still called "teacher-father" or is she "teacher-mother"?

Are there any books like those 70s Shaw Brothers movies?

Martial Arts Reddit - Sat, 04/27/2024 - 23:26

Westerns and Martial Arts are my favorite genres. There are a ton of Western books, but I’ve yet to be informed of a martial arts book in the same vein as The Five Deadly Venoms, The 36th Chamber of The Shaolin, The Kid with The Golden Arm, etc. Looking for plenty of three section staffs, gimmicky weapons like a flying guillotine, and bō staffs (I know it’s redundant to say that). Preferably something low fantasy or even historical fiction, but I don’t mind a bit of mythology.
