Frustrated with new gym

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 21:40

Quick backstory. I've been training martial arts for around 9 years now. I originally started in karate, and for the last 3 years I have been at a muay thai gym because I wanted something "more" for my training.

That being said, I find myself frustrated with the main coach of the Muay thai gym. It seems as though he only really cares or gives dedicated technique tips to his main group of guys. Where everyone else in the class (including myself) is usually left to their own devices during training or sparring.

I get the fact that as a coach you don't want to spend time on people that may quit within a few months and save it for the dedicated guys. But I've been consistently attending for the last 3 years, 3-4 times per week. First year I understood but the last 2 years have been frustrating.

I'm a southpaw and asked him for some advice during a drill and his response was "well you're gonna have to figure something else out" when I couldn't get the technique right.

One last thing that really irked me was that during this one sparring class I deliberately pulled the spar closer to being in front of the coach so maybe he could give some decent "cornering" advice from the sidelines. He instead shifted his gaze past us and was still just fixed on helping his main guys instead of anyone else.

Is this a bad coach or am I missing something here? I've tried talking to him but he doesn't talk very much to begin with unless it's again, the main guys at the gym.

If these two where a pro hero and villain respectfully in the Mha world how would they affect the plot and interact with the characters like the students in class 1 a and the members of the LOV(not my art)

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 21:20

The characters:

Leomon: an honorable warrior Leomon is Courageous and noble and a firm believer that every living being has their own destiny to live out, Leomon is a master of the secret styles of martial arts.

Ogermon: an honorable warrior Ogermon has a love to destroy however he is also known for serving more powerful villains and hating those who pick fight with those who can’t defend themselves espeshily children. He has a giant bone that he ripped out of an enemy he killed int the past which he now uses as a club.

Their relationship with each other: Ogermon and Leomon are rivals who fight whenever they cross paths. However there is more to their rivalry than that you see their rivalry borderlines on friendship most of the time they also have a great deal of respect for each other and genuinely don’t want to see the other get killed. (Spoiler alert) To the point where in the Digimon anime when Leomon dies Ogermon goes through a mini depression arc.

Sinario: these two were born in the world of MHA and live in Japan.

Looking For Training Space in the Bethlehem, PA Area

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 20:57

Hi all,

I'm looking for training space on behalf of a friend who is a highly skilled martial arts practitioner and teacher. We're looking in the Bethlehem, PA area. Ideally it would be great to sub-let space in a boxing gym, fitness studio, recreation center, community center, church basement... someplace where we can put down a few mats and hold classes several times a week for a couple or few hours at a time.

He teaches grappling, catch wrestling, and also is a master of a weapons-based martial art. He trained in boxing from the famous Smokin' Joe Frazier. For real! He's amazingly skilled and knowledgeable, but we have been unsuccessful in finding a space where he can teach. He has a small dedicated group of students and is hoping to add to them with people who want to learn real, practical martial skills.

If anyone has any leads, please let me know, This guy deserves a space, but right now he and his students have had to train in the parks when the weather allows.

TIA for any good leads.

Questions to ask for meeting with admissions officer

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 20:51

I have a zoom meeting with an associate director of admissions coming with the intent of asking some questions. I know almost everything about this college and it's one of my dream schools, and I have confidence that I have a real chance of being accepted. I scheduled this meeting to make a connection, forming a relationship with someone with power over whether or not I end up at this school. I talked to this person with my parents after a recent tour and made sure to express how interested and excited I am about the school. I'm honestly stumped on what to ask in this meeting, and was wondering what questions may drive the conversation best.

Some basic info:

Junior

3.8GPA

Intended major: Biology and if possible minor in physiology

4 APs by the time I graduate (Seminar, Lang, Stats, Bio)

High/perfect grades in major related classes

GPA improving over time

Finance club owner

Perspective wanted: hoping to improve pain, body composition, and resilience

Martial Arts Reddit - Mon, 04/29/2024 - 19:49

I’ll try to keep this short, apologies in advance:

Context: - Just turned 40, 160 pounds, 5 11” been testing T every few years and have always been mid 400’s since my early 20’s like clockwork.
- Most recent blood draw last month was highest ever tested at 510.
- Been very active since early 20’s weightlifting, running, bodyweight exercises, and martial arts.
- Never been able to gain muscle regardless of diet, macro tracking, 150+ grams of protein, etc. I can basically only gain fat or lose fat, that’s it.
- Have no cardiovascular concerns, no high blood pressure, no high cholesterol, no family history of anything significant, or anything like that. Do not take any medications.

History: - Have an old spinal disc tear in L5 that causes considerable pain in the area from time to time.
- About 12 years ago, I also injured my mid back in a way that never showed anything on an MRI but has caused chronic muscle spasms and tension in the area ever since. The best estimation I was given by doctors is ligament sprains or a mild tear that affected the stability of the area.
- Tried several anti-depressants, and anti spasm medications for pain/spasm, PT, yoga, several rounds of prolotherapy injections, supplements, acupunture, chiropractor, 10 years of mental health therapy (for related issues and others), thousands of hours of training and adjusting exercises, taking breaks, increasing core strength, etc - name it I’ve probably done it.
- To put it plainly, I’m in a lot of pain on a daily basis and it adds considerable stress and hinderance to my life. My gut tells me that some or all of this injury never healed, despite the monumental effort I have put forth to facilitate it.
- Also have a long history of IBS, with IBD for a two year period but have been in remission for over 10 years by cutting out gluten/dairy and generally maintaining a low-inflammatory diet.

Goals: - Decrease pain - Decrease fat - Improve physical resilience - Improve baseline conditions to ensure I can remain very active for the rest of my life - Increase muscle tone, recovery, and endurance - Increase tissue structural strength and repair - Improve confidence

I had a very open conversation with my PCP last month during my physical and laid everything out. I relayed that TRT seemed to check all the boxes to improve my wellbeing. Asked for his feedback and if I was thinking about things correctly, and asked if he thought TRT would be worth it to try and worst case if it doesn’t improve my baseline, I come off of it. Relayed that I have read medical journal entries that suggest that it could potentially help with nearly all of my struggle points in some way.

He agreed it was worth a shot and said he would prescribe what I wanted and would provide medical oversight with the limitation being that insurance naturally won’t cover treatment given my numbers. I’ve wondered if TRT was an option for me for over a decade and I’m at the point where I am now seriously considering trying it. I have no interest in pushing things beyond the typical normal range numbers and honestly, I have some concerns about screwing things up (estrogen, E2, red blood count, etc). Naturally, there are tradeoffs for everything. After reading extensively about injections and compounded cream, my preference is for the cream.

Free test and bioavailable levels are on the lower end, see screenshots below.

Would anyone have any feedback or related experiences to share? I also want to be clear that I am not under the false impression that TRT could somehow make all of these issues disappear, but it does seem that it could possibly lend some much needed help.

Thanks for taking the time to read.
