CMV: population growth is a bad thing

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:28

first reason, i’m climate change genius and don’t really pay attention to climate change but deforestation causes climate change to put up ugly ass houses and apartments.

second, it ruins rural communities in some instances like the sprawl of cities in areas like atlanta, charlotte, richmond etc.

third, ultimately food prices go up or you become more dependent on other countries when we get rid of farm land for suburbs and townhomes.

fourth, it’s bad for nature. animals who live in our forests and lands which are being kicked out for homes being built.

Black or silver HE Ultimate+?

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:28

Having a hard time deciding and wanted to check if it really is only a visual appearance change after reading posts mentioning less movability due to new screw positions.

Has anyone bought the black heusinkveld pedals? Do you recommend them over the standard silver ones?

Unpopular opinion

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:26

This is unpopular opinion, just don’t attack me I genuinely just want to have a productive conversation.

I don’t think blocking influencers is going to ultimately do anything. First of all, by creating this whole “block list”, all we are doing is just going to have people talk about palestine out of fear, which honestly is so superficial. I think anyone who speaks about Palestine now instead of last year october-December is automatically just doing it for their own benefit. I feel like all this energy into spreading hate and focusing on celebrities can be used in so much better ways.

What we should be doing is emailing our representatives, and attending as many protests as we possibly can. Yes we are blocking influencers, but if we aren’t actually actively doing anything what is the point? I urge everyone to go and email their representatives and raise their voice rather than bullying celebrities who only care about money.

Save. Your. Energy.

Reality check: for anyone who thinks these influencers or celebrities are genuine or care about their “following” or “Palestinian children”, most of them don’t. Yes there are some good ones out there (e.g kehlani) but people are only on social media to make a living 99% of the time.

Celebrities are not our hero’s. I’m not surprised one bit that they aren’t posting about Palestine, I haven’t followed them before the gen0c1de and I won’t follow them after.

Ethics of Procreation in the Context of Hindu Beliefs on Rebirth and Moksha

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:26

Hello everyone,

I want to preface this by saying that I am not religious and identify more as an atheist. However, I've been pondering over some aspects of Hindu philosophy, particularly the concepts of moksha and the cycle of rebirth. Hinduism suggests that the ultimate goal of life is to achieve moksha, which means liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Given this, I'm curious about the ethical implications, from a religious standpoint, of bringing new life into the world.

If the soul's goal is to avoid rebirth, isn't it contradictory to create life that will be bound to this cycle of existence? Isn't procreating, in a way, dooming a new soul to the very cycle from which liberation is considered the ultimate achievement?

Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from those familiar with Hindu philosophy or anyone who has pondered similar questions.

The Masculinity Crisis

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:26

https://preview.redd.it/wmt66mz6pi0d1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=1e8f3973d12a5ee5065849dab8765a7b89194490

In the contemporary landscape, a pervasive and deeply troubling phenomenon has emerged: a masculinity crisis that has left countless men grappling with confusion, disconnection, and an ineffective self image. This crisis has far-reaching implications, affecting not only individual men but also the very fabric of our society. At its core, the masculinity crisis is rooted in a complex interplay of social, cultural, and personal factors that have left many men struggling to find their place and purpose in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.

One of the most prominent manifestations of this crisis is the growing sense of frustration and unfulfillment that many men experience in their romantic and sexual lives. For a significant number of men, the pursuit of sexual and emotional intimacy has become a source of great pain. They find themselves struggling to navigate the complex and often confusing landscape of modern dating and relationships, feeling ill-equipped to meet the challenges and demands of an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving social and sexual landscape. Many men find themselves single for extended periods, grappling with loneliness, rejection, and inadequacy. Some remain virgins well into their adult years, while others have limited sexual experiences that leave them unfulfilled. Even those in long-term relationships often struggle with a lack of sexual spark and emotional intimacy, feeling drained and unfulfilled.

Moreover, men have lost the ancient wisdom of sexual alchemy, a practice taught in most cultures throughout history. This loss leads to men not receiving the benefits of physical and spiritual development that come from harnessing their sexual energy. Instead, they often waste their powerful essence, stored in their seed, through excessive ejaculation (into toilet paper). These outcomes create a negative feedback loop for men, leading to high porn usage, social isolation, poor mental and physical health, and even suicide.

The central cause of these struggles lies in the fact that traditional notions of masculinity, which emphasize strength, stoicism, sexual prowess, family legacy, strong tribe connections, spiritual enlightenment, and natural living, are increasingly becoming obsolete, which is in direct contrast with the realities of modern life. This leaves many men with a distorted sense of self, creating a destructive feedback loop that involves negative self-talk, interpreting experiences in a way that confirms the negative self-image, and engaging in behaviors that align with this distorted perception. As men become trapped in this cycle, they often lose touch with important life skills and self-regulating habits crucial for physical and mental well-being, further exacerbating the masculinity crisis.

Additionally, confusion stems from competing and contradictory messages about what it means to be a "real man," leaving them feeling lost in these conflicting expectations and demands. These external pressures and societal norms contribute to the formation of a distorted self-image in many men.

Some voices in the conversation around the masculinity crisis point to the "feminization" of men as a key contributor. The blurring of traditional gender roles, which is to protect the family, strengthen ties within the social circle, befriend other tribes/communities, and provide food and other aspects of physical security, has led to a weakening of masculine identity, leaving men feeling emasculated and disempowered. This ties to the concept of being a "high value" man, a position that men are increasingly failing to meet, which used to be tied to survival in nature, but is now tied to material status in this consumerist social paradigm. Furthermore, men think of themselves as inheriting the progress of history, with rights and freedoms claimed to have never existed before, but this is, and it's a bold claim, a huge illusion. There were definitely times where "progress" wasn't measured in GDP, mindless entertainment, or weaponry advancement, but in happiness, connection to nature, being able to survive based on hands-on food cultivation, natural remedies, coexisting with many creatures while maintaining balance in the ecosystem, and ensuring the cohesiveness of the tribe (to name a few). The illusion of an advanced society is perpetuated by the focus on technological progress and economic growth, while the TRUE resilience and well-being of society are often overlooked. This leaves society vulnerable and lacking the necessary skills to thrive and survive in the face of challenges around sustenance if access to the main commodities were to be disrupted for any reason.

These arguments point to the full complexity of the problem. The roots of the masculinity crisis are deeply entangled with a wide range of social, cultural, and economic factors, from the changing nature of work and the economy to the impact of technology and social media on our interpersonal relationships. Most people don't know why or how we got to this point where we see all these problems. Because of that, most men resort to blaming women, social media, politics, or any single external factor, which is an oversimplification that fails to address the deeper, more systemic issues at play.

Walking this complex terrain requires a deep and honest reckoning with the very nature of masculinity itself. It demands that we question our assumptions about what it means to be a man, begin to reimagine more expansive ways, and to connect to ancient ways of embodying and expressing our masculine energy. Only by confronting the crisis head-on, by doing the difficult work of self-reflection and personal growth, can we hope to heal the wounds of the past and present and build a more authentic and fulfilling vision of masculinity for the present and the future. This is where the concept of KOSMIC ENTELECHY comes into play – guiding men to actualize their ultimate masculine potential through inner game, outer game, and purpose. By focusing on personal development, natural skills needed to make women sexually and romantically interested, and aligning with a higher multi-layered purpose, men can tap into their innate potential and find a sense of fulfillment and meaning in their lives, ultimately contributing to the betterment of the world around them and leaving a positive legacy on Earth. It is through this journey of comprehensive and integrative growth that men can reconnect to their destiny and create a brighter experience for themselves and generations to come.

Opinions and Perspectives on the Bitter and Bittersweet Ending of LO

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:23
  1. The unnecessary inclusion of Uranus (and his subsequent demise as a "villain") doesn't add much to the narrative.
  2. I appreciate Gaia's color scheme, but her character feels like a replica of Persephone from earlier episodes when she displayed nervousness (e.g., in episode 90).
  3. The repeated use of the same body design for both male and female characters is disappointing. It would have been refreshing to see more diversity in body types. Unfortunately, most male characters seem like variations of Max Steel in different colors, and many female characters (excluding possibly Artemis and Hestia) share the same Persephone-like mold.
  4. Apollo's punishment seems inadequate considering the havoc he caused and his mistreatment of Persephone. Community service? Really? I find it hard to believe that's the extent of his consequences.
  5. Zeus's downfall is bittersweet. While I admired some aspects of his personality, especially his willingness to confront challenges like the trial involving Persephone and Hades, his ultimate fate leaves him appearing pathetic and inconsequential.
  6. The dissolution of Hera's marriage and her subsequent relationship with Echo feels forced and unnatural. While I understand some may appreciate this pairing, I personally find it lacking in depth and development, especially given the previous narrative dynamics between Hera and Echo.
  7. The unfortunate end of the Aphrodite and Ares relationship is difficult to accept. I cherished their dynamic and preferred it over the main relationship. Ares's transformation into a Persephone "simp" leading to their breakup, and Aphrodite's portrayal as a less significant character, detracts from their original appeal.
  8. Artemis's involvement with the goddess Selene feels unnecessary. Artemis is a strong character who doesn't require a romantic partner to lead a fulfilling life. The inclusion of such pairings seems to add little value to the story.

At what point do I sell a stock for the profit?

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:20

I am new to investing and have money in a stock. It has over a 20% return in gains now and I am wondering at what point do I sell it to reap those gains? Do I hold it if it is still going up in price? Do I just sell the profits? I am ultimately wanting to lock in those profits and keep reinvesting them. I don’t know my next steps are to do this. For clarity I’m working with an initial investment of 2k, (didn’t want to risk more at this time while I’m learning the ropes). The stock in question has a 1k initial investment and is still going up in price.

Need Help Choosing between Air 3 or Mini 4 Pro. I have never flown a drone before.

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:19

Hello, I’m new to drone photography and video. I am inspired by the Martijn Doolard and want to make a book about my home State in the USA.y ultimate goal is to sell this book on Amazon. It will be a collection of still images and text and illustrations. Anyway, since I’ve never used a drone and don’t have any FAA Certification, I was wondering if any of you guys in this community can give me advice on which drone to choose. I am attracted to the Air 3 because it also has 70mm lens as well as a 24mm. I tend to like the compressed field of view. But I heard that the Mini would allow me to fly in more places that the Air 3 would be restricted. Any advice would be great. Thank you all for your time.

Geneva to Paris long-ish weekend trip

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:18

Hi all, my 2 friends and I are planning to ride from Geneva to Paris is July.

Current plan is to start at end of rail line in La Cure at top of Juras then ride to Boissy Saint Leger (suburb on the RER train line into Paris). We live in Geneva and are all moderately fit (ride to/from work, some periodic day rides) but do not typically ride for multi-day trips. In the end we will stay in Paris for the night then take the train back to Geneva with the bikes.

The ultimate goal (other than enjoying the ride itself) is to make it to a concert on Monday night. We estimate the La Cure->Boissy Saint Leger route would take 4 days of riding ~130km/day, although we originally were hoping to do a 3 day trip (leave on Saturday instead of Friday) so am looking at options ending somewhere further outside of Paris where we could take a train into the city.

We all have bikes but are skeptical of their robustness for a multi-day ride. To be sure we have bikes in good working order we are thinking about renting hybrid/touring bikes that we can return to Geneva (by train with us). But based on many comments in this sub, I am considering buying a new, low end bike from Decathlon which is about the same price as renting.

Any advice on renting vs buying new, cheap bike? Any tips for this route/plan/places to stop or not?

Thanks in advance! Happy to find this forum - excited to get into bike touring around Europe!

Changing a form field to a link, then generating a new form based on the results of that

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:16

I'm building a budgeting app and in the view I created to add a new transaction the 'account' selection field is generated with:
form.fields['account'].queryset = Account.objects.filter(owner=request.user)

When the form is built this presents a ModelChoiceField using the accounts belonging to the current user. If the user has no accounts then I'd like to generate the form as usual but instead of the ModelChoiceField being presented for 'account' I'd like to present the user with a link to the account creation page. Something like:

if Account.objects.filter(owner=request.user).count() == 0: form.fields['account'] = {{link to 'budgetApp:new_account'}} else: form.fields['account'].queryset = Account.objects.filter(owner=request.user) form.fields['account'].widget.choices.field.empty_label = 'Choose an account'

How do I go about doing this? Ultimately I'd like to then return to the new transaction page and display the ModelChoiceField populated with the newly created account, but one thing at a time.

We need to wake the hell up

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:16

Social Media and smartphones are warping how we see the real world and our reality is losing nuance rapidly.

Take the man or bear debate as a recent example. The whole premise is unhelpful and based on a glaring falsehood. It's like a 13-year-old's first essay on a topic they know next to nothing about. I'm pretty sure actual survivors of sexual abuse don't give a single damn about this "dilemma". They have real issues to deal with that those of us who are engaging in this discourse have the privilege of not having to deal with. All this fad is doing is spread the paranoid notion that there are male predators waiting around every other corner. How is that helping survivors of abuse with real trauma and fears that they carry with them in public places on a daily basis? It is absolutely not a show of solidarity to those who have actually suffered, yet people do genuinely believe they are "raising awareness", or "taking a stand".

I mean it's a far-less improbable yet ironic scenario to imagine someone walking the dim city streets at night alone with their necks bent square over their smartphones, going round corners oblivious to their surroundings while texting "I'll take the bear lol". Those same people will say they're afraid to walk alone at night and they yeard for the bear. I made that scenario up, but I've literally seen people bumping into walls and into other people in a smart phone-induced trance and just continuing like nothing happened and I've also seen people gleefully (not ruefully) opt for "the bear". What I mean is a lot of people are claiming to be terrified when they're not.

Like with the Tik-tok trend that's been dangerously telling people they have "high-functioning anxiety" without professional diagnoses, where if everyone is mentally ill then no one is mentally ill1, it also stands to reason that if everyone is afraid, then no one is afraid. It's a dangerous way of "showing solidarity" to let pervade through society. I'm no Jordan Peterson fan, but this is a good example of the dangers of fake solidarity*. It's not just fake; it's damaging.

The whole bear vs man thing just seems to polarise people into two camps who perceive the other either as man-haters or rape-apologists. But you know what? it's not even close to being real and does absolutely nothing to bring people of differing views any closer to understanding each other. I also 100% guarantee you that those who "choose the bear" don't actually practise what they preach in their lives to even the slightest degree. One example I witnessed was at a recent social occasion where a female high school teacher whom I know quite well told her boyfriend and father to ask her if she was alone in the woods, what she would prefer... Before she even said the words "bear", or "man", I knew where where we were heading and intuitively knew what her answer was going to be.

It wasn't a debate from the very beginning. It was more like a joke - a weird joke about sexual assault told in the first person. Before she'd even got to her supposedly mind-blowing punchline (which was, in case you're a bit late to this party, "I'd choose the bear because the bear won't rape me!"), everyone seemed to know what it was going to be. Given the expectant grin on her face when she said these impactful words, It didn't turn out to be the “gotcha” she thought it was going to be. This was quite an awkward experience. I can only guess that the "gotcha" aimed at the men in the room was supposed to educate them to be ashamed to be male on the spot. It didn’t. I explained why I thought the whole thing was flawed and I was informed I needed to lighten up. I was definitely mistaken in thinking that it was a chance to talk philosophy (is it ever these days?), but perpetuating the idea that "male rapists are everywhere" while simultaneously trivialising real suffering of abuse goes completely unchecked because when we engage in this form of discourse we reduce ourselves to vacuous, infantile creatures who ironically think they're acting like fully-developed adults. Rape is light-hearted; yet - and this is where the cognitive disonance gets really odd - you're either standing up for it or you're standing up against it, but no matter what side you're on, it's funny. Instead of thinking, "why is she grinning?!", we're thinking, "what side am I on and how can I also somehow make it funny?". When in reality, it's surface-level shock-value statements with zero nuance that we allow to insincerely represent us (the wide-grinning rape denouncer doesn't practise what she preaches: she isn't a raging man-hater; she's a decent person, but for some reason, she's adopted an inane comic-strip view on something as serious as rape - and incredibly, it's all in the defence of victims!).

And this way of engaging in discourse is everywhere. On Reddit, Facebook, Twitter etc., the finger-pointing and artificial coralling of all of us into fake dualities of misogynist vs virgin-for-life simp, misandrist vs patriachy-enabler, racist vs communist and many others are rife and it's finding its way into real-life discourse at the dinner table, the classroom and the office.

If we artificially and insincerely self-separate into these 1s and 0s, are we making it easier for the A.I. on our devices to "understand" us, classify us, manipulate us and ultimately annihilate us?

OK, maybe I went too far there, but is this jarring lack of nuance really the only way we want to "talk about" serious topics now? Is it only going to get worse? I feel like it wasn't long ago you could have real discussions about issues, but this art is dying - and rapidly. You can probably sense my frustration at how society is organising itself right now and I'd love to know if anyone has any suggestions on what we can do to encourage healthy conversations and debate with each other. Maybe I'm the problem. I used to be surrounded by people who took part in stimulating, nuanced debate and now I'm not. We used to tolerate different viewpoints and we didn't confront and "block" each other on a hair-trigger. Maybe I'm old and the kids are actually all right. Let me know.

Do you ever look at your parents and be like Damn they really had everything better than us

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:16

Music, fashion, movies, pop culture, economy

Everything was so cool back then

Children of the 50s which then became revolutionary figures and psychedelic scene of the 60s, they had Beatles and then went to Disco, Groove and Funk in the 70s and then big hair in the 80s alongside new wave & synth

I admire how colorful and maximalist their culture was

Looking at our culture, the 2000s were not that bad but the 2010s? Those were horrible and most of us got ultimately screwed by the recession, it’s also when malls died and the minimalistic grey and corporate aesthetic took over everything, yuck

honeymoon phase over / TW self harm

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:12

A month ago I said that "I'd never have a binge problem" because I was able to consistently restrict for months. Now I'm in the cycle of binging > vomit purging > restricting. This triggered my relapse in self harm. I feel like it is impossible to move forward and my only choice is to start restricting again but that will continue the cycle. I convince myself for a small amount of time to say fuck this disorder, idc, not worth the mental and physical consequences, but then ultimately it goes back to consuming my mind in less than a day. Even if I consider getting help, I feel stupid because it's not even that "bad" from a weight pov though my hormones are screwed up rn. I hate osfed. I'd feel embarrassed to tell professionals that I have these insecurities about my body.

Why do I suddenly lose feelings after getting into a relationship

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:12

Ive noticed a pattern when I date guys, i'll start liking them and become obsessed but once we start dating the excitement wears off and I lose feelings after about a month. Its just weird because I feel so fixated and have such intense feelings but then it just slowly fades away until I become almost disgusted. Im able to detect when this happens because its always people who I start liking after meeting them instead of initially, and it becomes really easy for me to become grossed out by something they do which ultimately contributes back to why I lose feelings. The catch though is that after I have the conversation about how I lost feelings, less than a week later I start missing them and wanting them again. I'm currently in this situation with a guy who I just ended things with and Im wanting back, im worried ill forever be stuck in this loop and its not fair to those who i get in a relationship with for me to switch up immediately after becoming committed.

Flutter or Ionic: Choosing the Right Cross-Platform Framework

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:09

Flutter and Ionic are two well-liked frameworks for cross-platform app development that are frequently found in a developer's toolkit. The decision between them requires serious thought because each has advantages and disadvantages of its own.

The decision between Flutter vs Ionic ultimately comes down to the particular needs of your project and the level of experience on your team. Flutter might be the best option if speed, a beautiful user interface, and a flawless native experience are important to you. However, Ionic can be a better option if you want a well-known web development environment, a wide range of plugin support, and quick prototyping. Either framework has advantages and can assist you in creating cross-platform applications of superior quality.

What’s the point in carbon tax?

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 22:05

Please educate; genuine question.

I see conservatives saying the carbon tax is pointless. It just adds unnecessary costs to already, for the most part unaffordable situation that Ontario and Canada as a whole are in currently. Makes sense.

I see liberals saying that the carbon tax is only a few extra cents per litre at the pump, approximately only a dollar or two extra to fill up a full tank. Makes sense.

If this truly is the case, a dollar here, a dollar there, and then a rebate at the end of the tax season.. then what is the ultimate point of it? If the tax is an incentive to have people move off gas, then how is it doing so if it’s “only a dollar or two extra” for a full tank of gas.

For inelastic goods like gas, home heating, etc, I don’t see how a tax like this can be much of any good in the short or long run - especially if “it’s only a few more dollars, and you get a rebate”

And then there’s the argument of provincial and federal governments not knowing how much tax is collected as well, but that’s a discussion for another time.

Who chose ‘Faith of the Heart’?

Do we know what person is ultimately responsible for choosing this song for Enterprise? Did they ever publicly state why they went with a non space, iconic, intro like all other Star Trek shows?
