Is anything going to beat Boulder for me?

Fri, 05/17/2024 - 13:11

Looking for my next landing spot and have come to the conclusion that Boulder is the best spot for me, after a lot of research/reading. Would now like to put that thinking to the test here...I'm a single, 30 year old male, btw. Work remote.

Why Boulder?

-Love that it is 30-60 min from Denver, which means you have reasonable proximity to all the cultural items and big city amenities Denver is able to offer - professional sports, adult sports leagues (both of these are huge for me) - arts, events, food, Denver International Airport, etc. I'm not a huge fan of Denver's sprawl, so having proximity to Denver but getting a smaller and maybe more tight knit community in Boulder is a great balance on paper.

-Active, well-educated populace and tech/startup/entrepreneurial scene. I'm huge into health/fitness and being active (cycling, lifting, running, golfing, sports, etc) - Boulder seems like a great place to be to find others like that, as well as the secondary effects this has (farmers markets and farm-to-table food scene, for instance). At the same time, it's a city with a lot of educated people, which is a nice to have, and also has some tech/entrepreneurial activity going for it, which I definitely value.

-Mild weather & lots of sun. Big perk for me, love being outside so sun is key for me, at the same time Colorado's Front Range area has pretty mild weather year round.

-Mountain access. I know there is driving/traffic involved, but it's still there if you want it. I snowboard/ski, I love mountains as a visual aesthetic, and I road bike.

-Visually/aesthetically appealing. This is a weird one but big for me - I like urban areas that are well maintained and clean, with a touch of either class or modernity - something like Pearl Street fits well, haven't seen the rest of Boulder so TBD on this one at least for the urban setting...and I really like to have beautiful nature in & around the city, which I think Boulder is not short of. It's a very pretty city from the stuff I have seen/watched.

Just feels like my type of people/place between the active culture + the educated populace + the tech friendly scene.

Cons of Boulder and my thoughts/questions on them:

-COL. It's higher, but I'm OK with it - I have some good savings from living frugally and make about $200K per year, so it's not an issue for me and I'm fine paying up for a quality of life that suits/benefits me.

-Male/female ratio. This sucks, not sure what else to say. Boulder trends at like 1.3 male to female for 20-35 year olds, which is bad for dating as a straight single male.

-Homeless issue. This is something I really hate to see - it's sad on the one hand, and then can also be deterring when it's someone drugged out going crazy disturbing the peace, or trash and litter on the road or around encampments. That being said, it seems almost unavoidable in any mid/large sized US city.

-Dry weather. I feel like I get nosebleeds every time I'm in Colorado, likely just because I'm coming from humid environments. Will I adapt to this?

-Wildfires. Not sure the relative risk here - I'm renting, not buying, so moreso the inconvenience of smoke and hopefully not property damage risk for me.

-Air quality. This surprised me, but apparently really bad? Is that a year round thing or influenced by things like wildfire smoke? Can you escape the bad times if needed?

-Diversity - I'm not 100% sure on how this affects my day to day quality of life, but can understand how it gets listed as a con. Curious to hear some perspectives on this.

-Traffic/overcrowding - is what it is IMO. It's not LA or anything like that, it's just a byproduct of most US city design combined with attractive places to be/live.

Other places I have considered are:

San Diego (feels a bit too sprawly, and huge issues with homelessness/crime while I was there, also really expensive for low quality housing IMO + California COL/taxes)

Seattle (sunlight makes this a no-go)

Austin (lacks a bit of charm IMO, construction/traffic everywhere, meh airport connectivity and weak activities outside of Austin - FWIW I don't mind brutal summers actually, as I can just travel then)

San Francisco (SD problems but even costlier for what you get, that being said the access to nature and the startup ecosytem & tech scene here cannot be matched)

Raleigh (just seems too boring to me, candidly)

Boise, Flagstaff, Tucson, Burlington, Madison (just don't know enough here, but none of them leap off the page for me compared to some of the other picks)

Would love any thoughts/feedback!

Expansion Cities

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 15:20

With San Francisco/Bay Area getting the Valkyries in 2025, recent reports being that Toronto is getting a team in 2026, and the commissioner saying the goal is 4 expansion teams by 2028… which cities do you think will get teams? I also included a map made by u/neptunetheemystic of the closest team to each county. I attempted to find areas that won’t conflict with other teams.

I’ll give a few of my choices: - Toronto. It seems like it’s going to happen, but it’s a huge market with loyal fans and an ownership group excited to get a team. - Philadelphia. Diehard sports fans, have a new arena being built that they’d love to ensure occupancy throughout the summer, good ownership groups. I worry about them clashing with DC’s fan base instead of getting new fans. - Kansas City. It’s a growing city with great sports fans, lots of people willing to invest in sports in the area, and it has an arena that could be used right away. It’s also right in a sweet spot of not having competition with other teams. - Denver. Another city with thriving sports and far enough from other cities to forge its own fan base. - Portland. I don’t love Portland, but the WNBA seems to. I worry it’s too close in proximity to Seattle and SF. - Miami/Orlando/Tampa. Does Florida deserve a WNBA team given its anti-women and anti-LGBT political climate and the fact its failed two teams already? No, it does not. But there’s no denying that the south has a huge sports fan population. - Houston/Austin. Basically read everything I just said about the Florida cities, but it doesn’t suck quite as much as Florida. - Nashville. Again, similar to Florida and Texas but without the history of failure.

Run Club Review - Denver, CO - Mercuria Running's HTB Run Club

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 15:19

Running is an individual sport, but is much better when you have the support of a community. r/running provides that community in an online forum, but many running groups and clubs are scattered throughout the US. I plan to submit weekly reviews of different running clubs in different cities over the upcoming weeks - I currently have on the schedule Houston (multiple times), Los Angeles, Denver, Kansas City (multiple times), Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Atlanta (multiple times), Oklahoma City, Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando, and possibly Louisville. I hope you enjoy!

Club Name: HTB Run Club - Highland Tap and Burger Metro: Denver, CO Meet dates: Wednesdays at 6:30 pm Run date: May 1, 2024 Route distance: 3.1 or 6.2 miles

Last Week's Review: https://www.reddit.com/r/running/s/Jsa1fNld13

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mercuriarunning?igsh=MWo5NHU5dzBtY3Axbg==

Strava: https://strava.app.link/6bxq68G1CJb

This was the first time in a while I'd stayed in Denver, and believe it or not, I don't think I had ever gone on a run in this city. I was only here for a couple of nights, so I decided to check out one of the few Wednesday night run clubs that I could find. This run club is sponsored by a running coaching group called mercuria running, and the perks are pretty great. You get a free dinner by attending the run club.

I was staying in downtown, so I decided to make the 2 mile trek across town to the Highlands area. I was very impressed with the charm of the city and how pretty it is overall. The group meets at Highland Tap and Burger, and I arrived about 5 minutes early. The parking seemed a little tight, as street parking was all that was available.

When I walked up, roughly 20 people were already hanging out on the patio, and I quickly introduced myself to a few few of the runners. A little after 6:30 pm, the main coach and run Club leader gave a quick club overview and mentioned that there was a 3.1 mile route and a 6.2 mile route. I, along with the group I was talking to, decided to do the 3.1 mile route. The group took off, and immediately headed east towards Commons Park. The route is a loop course and consists of 1 and 1/2 mi running through residential areas and 1 and 1/2 mi running through Commons Park. Commons Park is a well-designed and lively Park west of downtown Denver that borders South Platte River. I ran with a local runner for the majority of the latter half of the run. Aside from the aesthetically pleasing Commons park, the end of the Run consists of a massive uphill climb that that is a leg destroyer.

After the run, runners lineup inside of a back room to get the free meal. They had a quinoa, rice, salad, ham, and spaghetti. While it was delicious, I couldn't help but think what an odd combination it was. However, out of all the clubs I've been to, not a single one has provided a free meal, so I'm definitely not complaining. While waiting in line for the food, I introduced myself to a couple new Denver transplants and we got talking about running, the Run Club, Denver, and life in general. Throughout the rest rest of the night, I was able to meet several other regulars and newcomers. Newcomers. Majority of people were young professionals ranging from mid-20s to mid-thirties. Additionally, it seemed the majority of the people were also transplants to Denver, although there were a couple people I meant who were born and raised in the area.

While the perks and route were great, The people of the club were were friendly and open a conversation. It definitely made the experience. I don't know if this was the case to other clubs, but as a newcomer, I felt very welcome and included.

1) Austin Venice 2) Brodiel 3) Abaddon LeFey

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 13:12

Descriptions Austin: Born to the Archangel Uriel and a human anthropologist, Austin is a Nephilim known for his comedic sometimes unhinged way of fighting opponents. He loves to cosplay when given the opportunity and enjoys heavy metal and hip-hop. He's a skilled dancer and musician as well as a cold blooded assassin.

Brodiel: A fallen grim reaper who's lived through the Medieval period to the end of the Victorian era, Brodiel is always updating and changing his wardrobe and weaponry to match the time period he is currently inhabiting as time passes. He currently sports punk rock/Metal attire and wields a hand-canon and a weapon similar to a Threaded cane from Bloodborne.

Abaddon: The Angel of the Abyss and Uncle to Charlie, Abaddon has been around since the beginning of time itself. He is a iron clawed ruler of the darkest pit of hell, Tarturus, and runs a Yakuza part time as chosen by his late father-in-law. His appearance mirrors that of both Seraphim and Goetia as his wings and face has more than two eyes.

How to Watch Formula 1 in Italy

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 23:58

Want to know how to watch Formula 1 in Italy? Here's the answer to this question.

Quick Steps: watch Formula 1 in Italy
  1. Subscribe to ExpressVPN
  2. Download the VPN app on your device
  3. Connect to a server in Austria.
  4. Access your ServusTV account.
  5. Watch Formula 1 2024 season for free!
Why do you need a VPN to watch Formula 1 in Italy?

Accessing Formula 1 in Italy can be tricky due to licensing restrictions that limit its availability outside the Austria. When you try to stream sports like Formula 1 from Italy, F1’s system detects your IP address and blocks access.
However, there’s a workaround: using a VPN. By connecting to a VPN server in the Austria, you can change your IP address and fool Servus TV into thinking you’re accessing the service from within the Austria. This allows you to watch Formula 1 Season 2024 in Italy on Servus TV without restrictions.
Using a VPN helps you bypass geographic limitations and adds a layer of security to your online activities by encrypting your data and preventing third parties from accessing it. Additionally, it can prevent your internet service provider (ISP) from throttling your connection, ensuring a smooth streaming experience.
For the best streaming experience, consider opting for a premium VPN service while in Austria to ensure reliable and uninterrupted access to Servus TV and other geo-blocked content.

Quit a sport and its hurting me to the core.

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 23:20

Hey; I'm currently a junior finishing up the year. I quit American football due to anxiety and I dreaded practice everyday and hated it/used to have panic attacks before it. I used to wake up and have my day instantly (3 seconds into waking up) ruined by the fact I had practice (I have a social battery so I need time alone a lot, having 3 hours a day after practice isnt enough) and my anxiety kicks in and as the day goes on, the closer I get to practice, the more my stomach begins to pain and I start trembling, and then sometimes I would just debate on not even going because I was afraid I'd sh** myself or something due to anxiety stomach aches. Its not even because of something like me not being good at football, its just so terrifying for some reason; maybe because I am a naturally slow-paced person that this rush of putting pads on and getting to practice quick frightens me? I also used to dread summer workouts; I really need summer to recharge, and waking up at 5:30 everyday isn't good for my mental, even though physically I'm perfectly fine. I love the weightlifting though, its one of my passions as of recent. Sometimes, I would constantly check my emails, wondering if there was something new from my coaches. I not only have anxiety, but also ADHD, OCD, loads of other BS that make it nerve wrecking for me when a coach is screaming in my face all day, I sometimes get so nervous I don't even hear what they say and I look stupid by messing up the drill. It also didn't help that I was a EXTREMELY underweight defensive tackle in such a tough football environment/division (Florida football). I hate the 3 hour practices too. I've been on meds and they still don't help, trying supplements and I'll see what they do. Everyday I would lose my mind over practice, yet there was something weird. For the past 6 months or so, since I left football, I have been fantasizing every single day about playing it again. Imagining myself playing linebacker or running back, stiff arming people as I run into the endzone. I miss the practices where we would do such hard drills and laugh as we caught our breath by the water station, I miss how intense those fridays felt, where I strapped up my helmet and went to war against whatever powerhouse of a school it was that week (I don't miss morning workouts lmao). But why? I suffered so much in my life because of this game but I don't know what to do; I don't want to spend my entire senior year not playing a sport (i did sign up for school related things obviously) but still, all those other guys balling out while at 2:30pm I'm heading home, the idea is depressing for some reason. Maybe I should make more friends? Invest more into the weightlifting? I hated the game but I loved everything that came with it. Even when I hear some sh** like a Kid Ink song I think about Tavon Austin's highlights, and then I want to play again. I made up my mind a few months ago about not playing but just helping with photography, but the thoughts of me wanting to play again are lingering, but as I type this I can already feel my stomach aching as I think about summer practice if I do come back; do I play or do I not play? Will it be worth it, heading home on friday's as my brothers are getting ready to have the whole town watch them play while i'm at home; at school going to the football pep rallies as I stand in the bleachers as a now mere spectator; the homecoming court; the playoffs we usually make (won state recently); senior night, even the end of the season? I can't imagine myself not falling into a pit of depression as I think about witnessing these things. I don't know what to do, I'm trying to convince myself that these are lifelong memories and that I SHOULD play but I don't know if I can go another season of that, feels like I have grey hair already at 18. I sometimes wish I had another year of highschool, where I can just be fine and then the year after play football, but I only have a few days now to make my decision. I don't know why I think about this game all the time, I love it and miss it but I dread it. Thanks to whoever read all of this, just needed someone to know about this.
