What’s Wrong with Canadian Housing Prices?

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 17:27

Killaloe, small town Ontario, $480,000, compared to San Antonio, Texas, $439,000 on Redfin. Prices are just ridiculous here in Ontario.

Will I be fulfilled if I don't go to the superclubs?

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 17:07

So I’m going to Ibiza soon, me and my friend are both in our mid-20s. Will I have a good enough party experience if I just go to the free beach bars in the San Antonio strip? I was looking at club tickets, but not sure any club night is worth 60 euros and overly expensive drinks for me… has anyone gone and done a more chilled, yet fun and satisfying clubbing experience? Especially in my age group? I was checking out pool parties, but they seem to be filled with 19 year olds…

Anyone going to San Antonio, TX?

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 16:36

This is a long shot, but wondering if anyone is going to San Antonio and would be willing to transport a floor sitting chair there to a family. It is a piece of medical equipment that my son used and there’s a young man there who could use it but shipping it is too expensive. I was thinking if some is an RV and is going there and has extra space to bring it. Like I said, long shot, but you’d earn much good karma!

Is life in the USA actually really expensive as Reddit suggests or just exaggeration? what am I missing?

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 16:34

Recently read posts like "you need to make more that 150k to make it in America" and stuff like that.

Now, I live in an impoverished border town in Texas that normal Americans prolly won't even consider part of the USA. But don't let that fool you, COL here is still "high" for what it is. A typical salary is $12 per hour. $8-10 hour jobs for office positions are normal. Yet we pay the same price for groceries as my family in NJ. We also got no Aldis. On top of that, property taxes are some of the highest. We're like the Midwest but without the benefits. and home prices are starting to rival San Antonio's. I visited California recently and was surprised at the prices of groceries! Everything seemed so much cheaper. I'm paying like $12 for chicken breasts here in HEB.

We make $50-60k household income (2 people, so like about $14-18 per hour each more or less for non-degree jobs). If you're in the medical field (or professional) you generally get paid very well and have it REALLY good.

Anyway, with our income and expenses we can live very comfortably nonetheless, take sabbaticals every other year if we wanted to, find jobs within a month, eat out once a month, buy what we want without regrets, etc. Ofc we don't have kids which would change the whole picture.

But how is it possible, that people making $60K alone (avg salary) on top of another partner (so $120k household income) are struggling? I mean, unless you live in San Francisco or NYC which I don't think most people are...??

Former KSAT sports anchor Greg Simmons gets probation in DWI case [Express News]

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 16:15

https://www.expressnews.com/news/article/sports-anchor-greg-simmons-probation-dwi-fine-19460300.php

Former KSAT sports anchor Greg Simmons, for decades one of San Antonio's most beloved TV personalities, has been sentenced to a year's probation on the DWI charge that ended his career.

Simmons, 68, entered a plea of no contest Tuesday to a charge of driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 or higher, twice the legal limit, Bexar County court records show.

He was sentenced to a one-year jail term, but he applied for and was granted probation, records show. Simmons also was fined $500, according to court records.

Simmons, a sportscaster for more than 40 years, resigned from KSAT days after his arrest on Jan. 27, 2023.

That night, he was driving a maroon Chevrolet Tahoe erratically in the Stone Oak area, drifting from lane to lane. At one point, he stopped his vehicle in the middle of Evans Road near TPC Parkway.

A Bexar County sheriff's deputy followed Simmons with his lights and siren on, but it took five minutes for Simmons to pull over, according to an incident report.

Simmons could not maintain focus and answered “yes” when deputies asked him where he had been, the report said.

Simmons believed he was driving on U.S. 281 and told deputies he was returning home from the Green Lantern, a speakeasy-like bar on the North Side, according to the report.

Asked for his license, he handed a deputy a gold American Express card, the report said. Simmons had trouble removing his license from his wallet, so he gave the wallet to the deputy to retrieve his ID for him, according to the report. Simmons agreed to a field sobriety test, but struggled and could not recite the alphabet, the report said.

The deputies could not obtain a sample of Simmons’ breath for a blood-alcohol test, so his blood was drawn instead. Lab analysis showed that his blood alcohol concentration, or BAC, was 0.15 or higher, a level often described as "extreme intoxication." The legal limit is 0.08.

At a court hearing in February, Simmons' attorney tried to have the blood alcohol results thrown out, arguing that they had been compromised by technical flaws in the state's protocol for drawing, transporting and testing blood samples. The judge denied the request.

Simmons was initially charged with driving while intoxicated, a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail. After receiving the lab analysis, the district attorney's office upgraded the charge to a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail.

Simmons' probation began Tuesday and is set to conclude on May 14, 2025.

BAC is the level of alcohol in a person’s body measured in grams per deciliter. It rises when someone drinks faster than the liver can filter out alcohol.

At 0.15 or higher, a motorist is at least 12 times more likely to crash than a sober driver, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Wed, 05/15/2024 - 14:06

Are there sny places in this area that serve San Antonio style Mexican food? I’ve eaten at many places in the area and some of the food is alright, but nothing has really impressed me. I spent many months in San Antonio wherecI ate Tex-Mex almost everyday, so I believe I know the good stuff when I taste it My ultimate goal is to find a Puffy taco, but I imagine the odds are about zero of that ever happeningin this state.. My friends, are there any places that even come close?☮️
