Run Club Review - Houston, TX - Mcintyre Heights Run Club
Running is an individual sport, but is much better when you have the support of a community. r/running provides that community in an online forum, but many running groups and clubs are scattered throughout the US. I plan to submit weekly reviews of different running clubs in different cities over the upcoming weeks - I currently have on the schedule Houston (multiple times), Los Angeles, Denver, Kansas City (multiple times), Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Atlanta (multiple times), Oklahoma City, Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando, and possibly Louisville. Review:
Mcintyre Heights run club meets in the Heights neighborhood of northwest Houston at Mcintyre's bar. One of the biggest issues I have had with run clubs located in or around a major city is the lack of parking. Fortunately, Mcintyre Heights bar has a huge parking lot that can accommodate a large run group, so finding the location to meeting and parking was super easy.
Out of all the bars in the Heights neighborhood, Mcintyre Heights is my favorite, although my exposure to the area is still somewhat limited. It has a great outdoor space and a covered patio area that is perfect for sitting and hanging out. The indoor space has a great vibe.
On the day of the run, it had rained for most of the day, so I assumed the group would be significantly smaller than what is typical. Even with the rain, a group of runners had already gathered around 6:15 pm when I arrived. A large sign with a QR code makes it clear that the group was still meeting, and some of the regulars introduced themselves right away. I made conversation with a group of guys for a bit before we took the group picture and headed off for the run.
The route is out and back course, heading west to the White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail, followed by a south turn before a halfway turnaround at the 1.75 mile mark. The entirety of the White Oak Bayou trail is paved, well maintained, and busy with patrons. There is one major uphill portion near the turnaround point that absolutely torched my legs.
I failed to research the route beforehand, but luckily a friendly runner who had ran with the group before shouted some directions at me so that I wouldn't miss the turnaround. After the run completed, we chatted for a bit, and I took some other club recommendations from him.
After the run, most of the runners socialized and took advantage of the 1 free drink all runners are provided. This is the best deal I have heard of the Houston area; most places only offer one or two drinks, but you get your choice at Mcintyre's.
This was a great mix of runners that included some very fit marathoners, general fitness enthusiasts, low-key social runners, and fans of the bar that happened to be along for the ride. I will have to check this club out again on a better weather day when there is a bigger crowd, but the experience was good.

My first post
I moved to Austin to be with my then love and after we had a falling out, and they moved away leaving me alone in this city with no family and friends…..being 29 and finding a stable job is the only reason I’m here. It’s very hard to make friends while working a 9-5 in an office with people twice your age and with families.
Dating apps are a joke, they really harm my self esteem and makes me feel worthless. I got a cat to help with loneliness and she’s been great and I’ve been trying to be a better friend to myself but there are times the room gets too small and too lonely and you wonder. If I’m incapable of finding love. Painting and drawing ,sports, reading the news helps plus listening to music but not having nobody here really sucks. Just wanted to vent

Lots of loosely related questions about visiting Austin
Hey, yall seem nice here. We're coming into town for a regional roller derby tournament in late June. Checking the calendar for when we'll be there, we have the opportunity to see the Of Montreal and the Pixies & Modest Mouse if we make a week out of it, so that's what we're going to do!
Questions:
- Easy Answer. Fuck Airbnb
- My wife is too short to see the band if anyone is in front of her - What are my best options for her to see? Pixies are playing at Germania and Of Montreal is playing at the Mohawk. If we buy GA can we get there early and stand at the front, or do we need to buy some kind of upgraded tickets? Do the seated areas all have decent visibility? For Pixies/Modest Mouse cost isn't really an issue, of Montreal isn't as dear to us and might not justify as much of an outlay.
- Farm Bill Drinks - I've gotten real used to having a low dose delta drink with dinner or out at the bar. Since Birmingham is a smaller, lamer city than Austin, I assume that Austin will have options too; but our hemp drinks are also based out of our beer culture and we do have an oversized (again, for a small, lame city) brewery scene, maybe we actually outperform on this one thing. Anyway, where should I set my expectations? Will some restaurants have options? Do I need to go to any special stores to pick something up, or are they widely available? What are your best-tasting local ones?
- Tubing & River - So it seems easy to book a tube trip on the San Marcos. As someone who is 40+ and never rushed, is this going to be pleasant or are chads going to be pelting us with beer cans the whole time? Are there some other options? There's that one super cool picture of a hole, is that worth the time or is it just photogenic?
- Taco Church - 20 years ago, someone took me to Maria's Taco Xpress on a Sunday morning and blew my mind. Now I'm finally making it back to Austin and it's closed. Is there anything else that's replaced it in the local zeitgeist, or does it live solely in the memories of those who cherished it?
- How do I keep coming up with questions?
- South(ish) Austin or somewhere else - The venue for the regionals hasn't been announced yet, but it looks like the team usually bouts in the Austin Sports Center. It looks like there's an Aloft hotel right there, would it be worth it to book a room there, or better to be somewhere closer to downtown, the University, or somewhere else? We like holding hands and walking down sidewalks, but probably not in places with zero shade.
- Parking v Uber v CapMetro - I'm from the easiest to park in mid-sized city in America. I know Austin will be worse. We'll have a car with us and I won't be drunk at any point, but will parking usually make it better to just take a cab? Is your public transit useful to visitors, or is it like ours and only barely useful for locals?
